Filling for gabions

Inert material and filling for gabions

Gabions are structures that we can fill with different types of materials. For this purpose, it is enough that the selected material is large enough so that it does not fall through the holes of the gabion itself. The materials that can be used to fill this type of structure are almost endless. They are definitely subject to experimentation and give the opportunity to take new and fresh ideas.

It should be mentioned here that in the construction of gabion structures for strengthening terrains and landslides, not so much choice is offered. Aggregate is important to meet certain characteristics so as to ensure the durability and serviceability of the structure.

For decorative gabions and those used in our yard, the choice is relatively wider.

Types of rock materials that can be used to fill gabions

Almost all types of rock materials can be used to fill your gabion. The only important condition is that the fraction of rock pieces should be larger than the openings of the gabion itself, so that the material does not fall through them. The rock fragments are divided into types, according to the groups of rocks:

• Igneous rocks
• Sedimentary rocks
• Metamorphic rocks

Which rock materials are most commonly used to fill gabions?

• Granite - rock pieces of granite rocks can be used to fill different types of gabions . They are of different colors, thanks to which you will achieve a relatively good decorative effect.
• Gneiss - gneiss is often used in construction. It is characterized by great diversity, with rock fragments ranging in color from gray to beige. Available in regular shape or as unshaped rock material.
• Sandstones - sandstone is quite specific in color and therefore pavers are often produced from it. As colors, it varies between red-burgundy and yellow-beige.
• Basalt Stone - Basalt stone is darker in color as it has shades of gray and black. It can be purchased with a regular paver shape or be oval.
• Marble - marble is mainly white in color, which is why it requires more maintenance during operation, because there is a chance that the stones will become dirty as a result of external influences. Because of its more expensive price, marble and marble stones are mainly used to fill the front part of the gabion.
• River stones - river stones vary in size and color. They are mainly oval in shape and can also serve to achieve a decorative effect when filling gabion structures. They are often combined with other rock pieces of smaller fraction to fill the space between them.

It may be mentioned here that often when filling gabions, the expensive aggregate material is arranged on the face of the gabion. In most cases, its integrity is filled with other cheaper Internet material.
